Children, don’t fill your pockets with shadows.
Don’t try, since you can’t do it anyway.
Don’t run about here and there
scratching at walls and grabbing and sand,
Wasting your time on things you can’t keep.
Children, don’t fill your pockets with shadows
Thinking that they are real things.
Don’t squander your efforts
cradling air and collecting imaginary treasures
Only to find that when you get home, there’s nothing there.
Children, don’t waste yourselves on things that aren’t really there.
Don’t be fooled by shine and shimmer
or taken in by optical illusions and strange new sounds,
Only to look up and find the day spent
and the light gone.
Children, do not fill your pockets with shadows.
1 John 2:15-17: “Do not love the world or the things in the world…the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
